Girls Soccer: Kahnweiler no longer treats field hockey as an afterthought

Before coming to North Shore Country Day, Kim Kahnweiler knew basketball and soccer were two sports she would play in high school.
Kahnweiler needed to find a activity for the fall to round out her a freshman year.
Cross country was out of the question, considering she treats running as something only done when chased. Volleyball wasn’t much of an option, either.
Kahnweiler turned to field hockey, a sport her older sister McKensie played at New Trier.
Four years later, Kahnweiler is off to play field hockey at Bowdoin College in Maine.
But not before playing all three sports on the varsity level for four years.
“Sports played a pretty big part in why I went to North Shore instead of New Trier,” said Kahnweiler, whose twin brother Kyle played lacrosse at New Trier. “It’s a different experience here. I played in a lot of travel leagues growing up, and North Shore got me to re-find the fun in sports. I learned to love them again.
“I would not have traded my athletic experience for one at New Trier, where it’s incredibly intense. At North Shore, I was able to get better, and I was able to help others get better.”
North Shore was thrilled to have an athlete of her aptitude at the small private school.
“I can’t say enough good things about her,” said Natalie Kohn, Kahnweiler’s soccer coach sophomore and senior seasons. “Losing her is emotional. She was that kind of player — such a great spirit on the field.
“Everyone around here knows Kim Kahnweiler.”
Kim followed Alex, the second-oldest sibling in the Kahnweiler clan, to North Shore.
Although they selected different roads, Kim will follow McKensie as a college athlete when she gets to the Brunswick campus later this summer. McKensie played lacrosse at Denver.
Before she starts the next stage of her life, Kim will be busy this summer balancing Bowdoin’s workout program with a job at Ravinia in Highland Park.
In the little free time she has, Kahnweiler enjoys decorating cakes, like the TV personality Duff Goldman, and participating in North Shore’s community service club.
While there won’t be a Kahweiler at the school next year, Kim’s contributions won’t soon be forgotten.
