De La Salle travelled to the North Shore and had no trouble shutting down Loyola en route to a 52-33 Catholic League North victory Friday night in Wilmette.
“They’re a good shooting team, but our man-to man defense contested every shot,” said De La Salle coach Tom White.
The No. 12 Meteors (14-3, 5-2 Catholic League North) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and led 24-12 at the half. They took away all doubts with a 9-0 run to begin the third quarter, fueled by DeMarcus Richardson. The junior scored all seven of his points during that run.
“In the first half I was struggling with my shot, but the coaches told me to keep shooting,” said Richardson.
Gavin Schilling and Alex Foster recorded double-doubles, with Schilling scoring a game-high 16 points and pulling down 11 boards. Foster scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
“When it comes to rebounding, I want to be in good position to get the ball,” said Schilling. “They’re a good outside shooting team and we wanted to limit them to one shot.”
It’s the Meteors’ second game without starting forward Alvin Ellis, who should be back in a week and a half.
“It was tough being out there without Alvin and I didn’t have a good game, but we had a few days of practice and tonight we were ready,” said Schilling.
The Ramblers (7-12, 3-4) were led by Peter Pujals, who scored nine points.
The game was a tuneup for a pair of games against ranked teams for the Meteors. De La Salle plays at No. 10 St. Rita on Feb. 3 and hosts No. 21 Hillcrest on Feb. 7.
