Maggie Lyon said she and her New Trier teammates wanted to make a statement last weekend.

They did just that with a home win over Niles West and its star senior Jewell Loyd.

The Trevians have a chance to make another one Friday night by once again playing the spoiler in the CSL South.

Trailing by two games with three to play, New Trier is a long shot in the conference race, but the Trevians dashed Niles West’s hopes of taking sole possession of first with a 56-43 victory on Friday.

The Northwestern-bound Lyon had 29 points in that win, including 10 during a key 14-3 run in the second half. Meg Rosinski also helped her team take a 14-point lead late in the second quarter with her defense on Notre Dame-signee Loyd, who missed her first seven shots.

“Our goal today was to focus for all four quarters, never give up and just show everyone the team that we really are,” Lyon said. “We wanted to come out and really make a statement. We wanted to show that we are still one of the better teams in the conference.”

The win snapped a three-game skid and was only the second win in seven contests for New Trier, which will host another one of the CSL South’s first-place teams Friday.

“It’s all about getting better and we tried to get better from those (losses),” coach Teri Rodgers said.

Glenbrook South heads into Winnetka in a three-way tie for the conference lead at 5-2. Maine South will travel to Niles West on that same night, meaning the Titans have a chance to make it a two-way tie if they can top the Trevians. Glenbrook South prevailed 49-44 during the previous meeting Dec. 9 in Glenview.

“We’ve got another great conference opponent on Friday then two games on Saturday (in the Sweet 16 tournament at Lake Zurich), so there’s no rest,” Rodgers said.
