Wilmette’s Cho receives poetry award

Hayun Cho of Wilmette and a junior at North Shore Country Day School received a Gold Key Award for her poetry from the National Stage of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers/Scholastic Awards. Teens in seventh through twelfth can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.
In addition, Cho was awarded a full scholarship to the 2012 Telluride Association Summer Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, “Modernism through Modern Art and Theater.” These six-week educational programs involved college-level seminars for gifted and highly motivated high school juniors.
Earlier this year, she was awarded an Honorable Mention from the Claudia Ann Seaman Awards for Young Writers for her fiction piece, “Ms. Kim.” Cho’s piece is published in the current volume of Polyphony H.S., a high school literary journal. North Shore English Teacher Kathy McHugh, said “Hayun is an incredibly talented writer, and it’s wonderful to see her gain this well deserved recognition. Teaching her is a joy because of her powerful intellect and passion for learning.”
