Pet of the Week: Scarlett loves to patter after people
Scarlett

Scarlett is not only gentle, lovely and sweet, she is also a lucky coonhound. Found on an Indian reservation in New Mexico, she ended up at a high-kill shelter in Albuquerque.
The volunteers there were bereft at the thought that this loving dog would be killed. Because another dog was on her way to Chicago, I agreed that Scarlett should come, also. I named her Scarlett in honor of another coonhound who found a wonderful home and lived nine years with a wonderful family.
I’m hoping that this Scarlett finds a home just as loving. And I’m hoping that this Scarlett brings as much joy into the lives of her new family as the first one did.
Both Scarlett and her traveling companion traveled from car to car as they made their way up north. Curled up together, they calmly waited for whatever fate would bring.
This petite red and black coonhound has long silky ears and huge light brown eyes. She is not a noisy dog, but she does love to follow people around the house, gently pattering after them.
Scarlett also loves other dogs and would love a playmate. Because she is a hound dog, she will need a fenced-in yard or to be walked on a leash. Scent hounds can never be trusted off-leash, as they will follow a wonderful scent wherever it takes them.
Scarlett is also great with children. She has a “brand” on one of her ears from either acid or dry ice. Apparently, that’s what some hunters use to identify their dogs. Luckily, Scarlett will never need that brand to be identified again. Her family will know her at a glance. She will never be hungry again; never be cold again; and never be homeless again.
Right now Scarlett is living with a wonderful foster family in Lake Forest. They say she loves to follow their dog around the house. Although she is housebroken, she will need some obedience training to be the very best companion she could be.
Let Scarlett bring some color into your life this spring!
