An estimated 2,000 youngsters and teens take part each week in the Wilmette Park District’s gymnastics program, participating in the fun and challenge of learning and
mastering everything from floor routines to the uneven parallel
bars.
In fact, the district operates the largest gymnastics program on the North Shore, district communications manager Shelagh Donoghue said last week.
On July 13, 70 girls in the program and about 50 of their parents and friends had the chance to hear from Carly Patterson, the 2004 Olympic All-Around Medalist about her gymnastic career.
Patterson, who was in the Chicago area to publicize the Cover Girl Classic Gymnastics Meet on July 23, took time to visit the Community Recreation Center and speak to program participants.
Patterson also signed autographs and answered questions from the girls, including queries on her favorite events and how she felt taking part in the Olympics.
