Evanston man charged in Wilmette burglary

WILMETTE — An Evanston man who inadvertently copied Cinderella when he fled Wilmette police Aug. 2 — leaving one shoe behind as he did — has been charged with burglary.
Tate Xavier Wuertz, 18, of 802 Brummel St. in Evanston, has an Aug. 14 date at Cook County Court in Skokie.
Wilmette police said a resident of the 1200 block of Gregory Avenue found Wuertz rummaging through his car about 11:30 p.m.
The resident called police, then confronted Wuertz, who took off so quickly that he shed one shoe as he fled.
A short time later, police said, an officer responding to the resident’s 911 call saw a car driving away from the area with its headlights off. The officer stopped the car at the intersection of Prairie Avenue and Isabella Street, and detained Wuertz.
Not only did the resident identify him as the man he found in his automobile, Wuertz was unable to explain why he was driving with only one shoe on, police said.
Officers back at the scene of the burglary retrieved his other shoe. They also tied Wuertz to a second auto burglary discovered next door to the first car.
In both instances, owners had left the vehicles unlocked and loose change had been taken.
