Kenilworth chooses renewable energy

Wilmette sustainable energy fans couldn’t convince village trustees earlier this month to go with a 100 percent renewable energy plan from new electric power provider mc2. Proponents further north on Green Bay Road in Kenilworth, however, appear to have had more success.
Kenilworth, which is part of the Lakeshore Power Alliance with Wilmette, has required mc2 to provide the equivalent of 100 percent clean power through the purchase of renewable energy credits.
Kenilworth trustees who met June 18 chose the 100 percent renewable option at the same time they approved the three year contract with mc2, Village Manager Brad Burke said June 21.
Village residents and small businesses who don’t opt out of the aggregation program will pay 4.11 cents per kilowatt hour for power, which is slightly higher than the 4.035 cents/kWh rate negotiated for Wilmette residents. It is still significantly lower than the electric generating rates charged by ComEd.
Burke said Kenilworth trustees wanted to encourage a community dialogue about environmental concerns and sustainability issues when they made the decision.
“I think they felt that … the limited amount of extra cost to have that 100 percent energy credit mix would help continue that conversation about sustainability in other ways.”
