More mosquito spraying for east, central Wilmette

North Shore Mosquito Abatement District trucks will once again make their way down the streets of Wilmette and neighboring communities Thursday night, district and Wilmette officials said Wednesday.

As long as the weather cooperates, abatement district crews plan to conduct targeted spray operations against the current crop of adult mosquitoes, starting at 8 p.m. and running until 2 a.m. Friday.

Although the district sent trucks out to cover all of Wilmette earlier this summer, the Aug. 28 effort will largely target the east end of town, running from the Evanston border north to Kenilworth, into that village and up to the Winnetka border.

Abatement trucks will cover an area running from the lakefront north through the entirety of east Wilmette and up throughout east Kenilworth. The targeted neighborhoods will run west to Ridge Road on the north, head further west to Hunter Road south of Lake Avenue through to the village’s south border with Evanston.

Although most of the district’s control efforts have been focused on killing larvae, the periodic spray dates are designed to deal with adults.

According to NSMAD communications manager Dave Zazra, traps across the district showed a slight increase in floodwater, or so-called “nuisance” mosquitoes, during the week of Aug. 25 over the same period in the previous week.

However, the population of Culex mosquitoes, the species that carries the debilitating and sometimes fatal West Nile Virus, increased significantly in the same period.

Of the 61 mosquitoes testing positive for the virus, abatement test teams found four of them in Wilmette traps this summer. The first Wilmette mosquitoes to be infected were found just this month. So far this year, the Illinois Department of Health has reported one case of the virus in humans, in a Chicago resident.
