In addition to students, the New Trier High School Board of Education returns to school as well.

Tonight’s Board agenda includes new teacher introductions, financial updates and a report on new trends in athletic training.

One report board members are eager to hear concerns the district’s special education program, to be delivered by Director of Special Education Ellie Ambuehl.

Ambuehl’s report includes an overview of special education services provided by New Trier, an examination of surrounding districts and an analysis of recent budget increases.

Board members had raised concerns about rising special education costs, wondering if the increases were the beginning of a trend or a one-time increase.

During New Trier’s May 19 meeting, Ambuehl said the school had an increase of students coming in from sender districts, something the school board hopes to monitor.

“We want to investigate with our sender schools to establish relationships with parents,” Ambuehl said. “It’s swings of hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the placement [of students]. For me ethically and personally, it’s about what’s in the best interests of the students.”
