Thanks for slimmed down school plan

The New Trier School Board met Aug. 14 and voted 7-0 to go to the community for an $89 million bond issue request to complete some long overdue renovations to the New Trier East campus.

Thank you, board. Although the last referendum, in 2010, was defeated, this proposal is considerably slimmed down and thoughtfully addresses concerns that really are in need of repair and renovation. Portions of the current buildings cannot even be accessed by students or staff with disabilities, which is simply unacceptable for our public high school.

This new plan is a much more manageable bite for the taxpayers and will keep New Trier at the forefront of high schools in Illinois and nationally with technological updates that enhance the classroom experience, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

It is a plan we can all support and a sound investment in our wonderful high school and the community it serves.

Sincerely,

Susan Schmitt
