While attending various north shore street fairs this summer, the New Trier Democrats were busy handing out candidate information and conducting their own straw poll for the upcoming presidential election.
At street fairs in Wilmette, Winnetka and Glencoe, the New Trier Democrats polled more than 150 potential voters.
According to the results, residents strongly favor Hillary Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee, and find Jeb Bush as the leading candidate to be nominated by the Republican party for the 2016 presidential election.
“We listed six Democrats and asked which of the six would be their preference,” said Dick Doub, a member of the Executive Committee of the New Trier Democrats. “We listed 12 Republicans and asked which one they felt would most likely get the nomination.”
According to Doub, 33 responses were gathered in Glencoe, 33 in Winnetka and 103 in Wilmette.
Final numbers had Clinton receiving 78 percent of the support, with neither Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Cuomo or Martin O’Malley gaining more than 10 percent each.
Bush was the highest-rated Republican, taking 31 percent of the vote, followed by Chris Christie (16 percent) and Rand Paul (11 percent). Nine other potential Republican candidates received votes.
“We do the poll [annually] and it’s a different poll every year,” Doub said. “It just depends on what the issues are. Every year we try to have a political straw poll.”
The New Trier Democrats are based at 800 Oak St. in Winnetka. More information about the organization is available at www.ntdo.org.
