Winds knock out power to thousands in city, suburbs

CHICAGO — Throughout the Chicago area Sunday afternoon, thousands of homes and businesses have had their power knocked out, as high winds move through the area, disrupting and in some instances knocking down power lines.
Power outages throughout the Southwest Side and south suburbs Sunday have left nearly 8,000 homes and businesses without power, according to ComEd.
Communities being affected include Burbank, Chicago Ridge, Country Club Hills, Evergreen Park, Homer Glen, Homewood, Midlothian, Oak Forest and Orland Park, according to the utility’s website.
Southland communities say their public works crews are also responding to reports of downed power lines due to high winds. In some cases, ComEd is telling communities it may take up to two hours to respond to downed lines as it is deploying resources to multiple outages in the Chicago area.
Separately, the Orland Fire Protection District and Tinley Park firefighters responded to a wind-fueled grass fire north of Interstate 80 along the east side of 80th Avenue. Police temporarily closed 80th Avenue to traffic.
Thousands were without power in other parts of the metropolitan area Sunday afternoon, as well.
As of about 3:20 p.m., in the Hinsdale and Westmont area, about 2,600 were without power, according to ComEd’s website. In the Elmwood Park area, about 845 were without power and in the North Riverside area about 400 were without power. In north suburban Northbrook, about 1,000 were without power, according to ComEd.
