Lace up for Wilmette’s Amazing Race

WILMETTE — Most birthdays get commemorated with a cake, some presents and a party. As Wilmette’s 140th anniversary year kicks off (the official birthday was Sept. 19), fans of the village should eschew the cake and presents for a sturdy pair of running shoes.
That’s because the Wilmette Historical Museum wants them to celebrate by taking part in Amazing Race Wilmette this weekend.
“I think it will be a terrific event. It shows how proud we are of our community,” museum Board President Joseph Hinkel said Sept. 23.
Amazing Race Wilmette, set for 1-3 p.m. Sept. 30, is open to teams of 2-4 people, mirrors the popular CBS show The Amazing Race, museum Program Director Rachel Kuhn said Sept 20. Registration runs until 4:30 p.m. Sept. 28; forms are available at the museum website, www.wilmettehistory.org/programs.html, and the $10 team fee is payable there or at the museum.
“I’ve always loved the show, and I thought it would be a great way to get a lot of people together, learning about their community and having fun at the same time,” she said.
As in the televised show, teams will complete mental and physical challenges and race to different locations, competing for prizes. The locations to which teams will dash are seven historically notable sites.
“You don’t need to be a history buff to take part, but you’ll definitely find out interesting things about the village,” museum Director Kathy Hussey-Arntson said Sept. 20.
